SHOP > VARIOUS ARTISTS - SONGS FROM THE HYDROGEN BAR
There is no doubt about it Chemlab were one of the best bands to come out of the Industrial rock / Coldwave what ever you want to call it scene. Maybe they didn’t make it as big as NIN and Ministry; however their influence on a new generation of bands can’t be mistaken.
Now to pay tribute we have the album Songs from the Hydrogen Bar (named after the Chemlab website and the band’s first album), a collection of covers from contemporaries of the band and some great new acts.
More than your average tribute album, Songs from the Hydrogen Bar shows a real love and appreciation for Chemlab from all the acts involved.
This is what Jared from Chemlab had to say about the tribute.
"Tributes are so often tired, thought-to-sexlessness, over-produced and then mercilessly stuffed deep into the gaping, pustule-festooned maw of the marketplace these days (thank you, Cleopatra) that to build a tribute record that has anything authentic to deliver is a journey embarked on only by the insane or the desperate. Fortunately, "Songs From The H-Bar" is created by the desperately insane, utterly marginalised and ferociously independent. Capricious too. The selection is varied and sprawls across the dial with great success, leaping with alacrity from beat-shuddered extremes, through 22nd century guitar slash to dub-drenched ambience, all of it bathed in the sickly light of fractured grooves and poisonous experimentation. Tributes are neutered when they reek of respect and conventionality, and "Songs" succeeds by refusing to treat itself or its subject like some sacred cow. I could dissect each track, but that would delay you from buying it. Suffice it to say that it makes Chemlab listenable for me again.
